Acclaimed restaurant to open at north Cornish vineyard

Published January 6th, 2020

Trevibban Mill has announced its new restaurant partner set to open at the vineyard in mid-March.

Award-winning British restaurant, The Ethicurean, will celebrate its 10th anniversary by launching its second venture on the site near Padstow.

Founded by brothers Matthew and Iain Pennington, The Ethicurean has a reputation for innovative, ethically conscious, modern cuisine, guided by the seasons and an overriding sense of place.

Engin and Liz Mumcuoglu, owners of Trevibban Mill, have described how the partnership with The Ethicurean developed. Liz said: “Back in August we compiled a wish list of our favourite chefs and restaurants which we felt would enhance our offering here at the vineyard.

“The Ethicurean was top of that list, and by pure coincidence Iain Pennington phoned me to say he’d just tried our 2014 Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine and was interested in stocking it. The rest, as they say, is history.”

Co-owner of The Ethicurean, Matthew Pennington, said: “We’d been looking for a second site for two to three years, but hadn’t found the right location. When we heard from Liz and Engin it was clear that Trevibban Mill was the perfect match for us. They’re like-minded and inventive, which creates a natural synergy, with similarities to our current location.”

Driven by a natural curiosity and a constant desire to learn, Matthew and Iain are renowned for their revival of ancient food crafts such as lacto-fermentation, curing, pickling, and smoking, while maintaining a zero-waste approach.

With The Ethicurean’s current restaurant situated in a Victorian walled garden overlooking the Mendip Hills, the vineyard at Trevibban Mill offers an equally inspiring location. Sitting above the winery and tasting room, the new restaurant has panoramic views over the vineyard and valley beyond.

The 80 cover restaurant will champion vegetable-led cooking, whilst supporting Cornish fishmongers and pasture-rearing farms local to the vineyard to create enticing daytime menus and refined evening tasting menus – all to be paired with Trevibban Mill wines. Wine tasting and guided tours of the vineyard and winery are available onsite, offering an extended experience to diners.

The venue will also host weddings and events for up to 120 people, something The Ethicurean team is already well celebrated for.

Iain Pennington added: “We’re really excited to bring our approach to Cornwall, offering experience dining to those wanting to share our passion for fabulous food in a glorious setting.”
