Gardening scheme launches fundraising campaign

Published March 7th, 2016

A Cornish scheme that uses gardening to support people with learning disabilities has launched a campaign to raise funds for a new fruit cage.

People and Gardens is a Cornish community interest company based at Watering Lane Nursery, near Pentewan. Staff are launching a Crowdfunder campaign on 9 March 2016 to raise the £1,500 required to fund a new fruit cage.

The cage will enable strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants to be grown on the People and Garden’s site at Watering Lane Nursery near Pentewan. Founder Ken Radford said: “The cage is designed so that all of our participants can easily access the area and get involved, learning new skills and growing new produce for the local businesses we support, and our local veg bag customers. We hope to purchase this in the spring ready for the summer growing season.”

Established in 2010, People and Gardens encourages attendees to get involved in the full cycle of growing and selling vegetables, from sowing seeds and picking crops, to packing bags for local customers.

Through gardening, these attendees are able to develop as individuals, increasing their sense of well-being and self worth, developing practical and social skills, and being given equal opportunities in the workplace.

The fundraising has got off to a good start, with a £500 donation from the Cornwall Community Foundation, but a further £1,000 is still required to hit the target.

Pledges can be made online by visiting their Crowdfunder page, and rewards include cream teas, Sunday lunches and wine tours at Knightor Winery, St Eval Candle Company gifts, and Eden Project tickets. The star reward is exclusive use of the Knightor Barn for a pledge of £1,250, a prize worth £2,500.
