Gilbert & Goode adds to its trophy cabinet

Published December 18th, 2020

A Cornish housing developer is celebrating after winning two trophies at the Constructing Excellence South West awards.

Gilbert & Goode was awarded Highly Commended Building Project of the Year for its affordable housing development at Praze An Beeble, and pre-construction manager Callum Yeowell was named Future Leader.

The awards celebrate the best of construction across the South West, recognising organisations and individuals driving excellence in the industry. The winners were announced during an online ceremony on Friday 4 December.

The 100% affordable housing development at Praze An Beeble, titled The Kew An Gew, comprised 24 homes of excellent quality.

Managing director, Pete Sadler, said: “I’m so pleased this development, which went to people with local connections, has gained the recognition it deserves with this award.

“The sense of place and strong heritage in the village meant materials and finishes were carefully considered. Sitting adjacent to a Cornish Mining World Heritage site, we built attractive granite fronted cottages to fit seamlessly with its 200-year-old historical neighbours. This attention to detail was praised by the judges and existing residents of the community – which is something we are really proud of and would like to thank Trewin Design Architects and WSP for collaborating with us on this successful project.

“Our whole team would also like to congratulate Callum on winning the Future Leader award. He is making great progress with his career, is extremely hard working and shows a passion for the industry. I strongly believe Callum has the makings of a future leader, and I am sure he will continue his progression within the sector.”

The trophies were presented to Gilbert & Goode at its office in St Austell on Monday 14 December by Constructing Excellence South West CEO, Andrew Carpenter.

He said: “Callum’s impact on the business is most impressive for one at the start of his career, and if this progress continues, we have an undoubted future leader. All four nominees go to show what a fantastic array of young talent we have coming through our sector in the South West.”

Commenting on winning the Future Leader award, Callum Yeowell said: “I was over the moon to win this award, and it was great to be able to celebrate with my whole team when the news was announced over Zoom. It was a completely different atmosphere to the usual awards events with only a few members of the company attending, which was really exciting.

“I started working with Gilbert & Goode in 2013 after applying for work experience during my first year of university, and I’ve been with the company ever since. I’ve achieved a lot over the last few years, and I see winning this award as recognition for what I’ve already done as well as inspiring me to continue progressing on my journey.”

Gilbert & Goode has had a busy year, including work on two luxury developments – Lannanta Forge in Lelant, and FIVE in the suburbs of Truro – as well as preparing for upcoming developments in Hayle, Bodmin, St Teath, and Trewoon.
