New route for Cornish Cycle Tours

Published January 5th, 2015

A Cornish cycling holiday operator is launching a new tour in the county, showcasing west Cornwall’s up and coming food scene.

Guests of Cornish Cycle Tours can take the self-guided West Cornwall Tour, and indulge in food from the likes of Rick Stein, Ben Tunnicliffe and Ben Prior along the way.

Beginning in the pretty village of Porthleven, home to Rick Stein’s newest restaurant, the West Cornwall Tour takes cyclists to Porthcurno, St Ives and Falmouth before returning to Porthleven.

Lanyon Rowe, who runs Cornish Cycle Tours, said: “Cornwall’s food scene is as fantastic as ever, and many of our guests love to enjoy delicious Cornish food, guilt-free, knowing they’ll burn it off on their bike.

“The tour lasts five days and includes four overnight stops in inns and guesthouses. We take care of daily luggage transfers, maps, bike hire and a breakdown service so all cyclists need to think about is pedalling.”

Cyclists on the West Cornwall Tour cover 106 miles in total, and an average daily distance of 26.5 miles. Those who would like a little extra pedal power have the option of hiring electric bicycles, which are powered by a small, rechargeable battery.

Cyclists arrive in Porthleven on the first day where they can visit Stein Porthleven. There is also harbour-side restaurant Kota Kai whose head chef, Jude Kereama, is taking part in the 2015 series of BBC2’s Great British Menu.

Continuing to Porthcurno on day two, the tour passes Cornish town Marazion which is home to Jay Rayner-approved Ben’s Cornish Kitchen. Further along the tour is the Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn, run by Ben Tunnicliffe, who earned a Michelin star for The Abbey in Penzance.

The West Cornwall Tour also includes an overnight stop in St Ives, home to multi-award winning Porthminster Beach Cafe, before heading to Falmouth where cyclists can eat with sea views at The Stable or Gylly Beach café bar and restaurant.

The new tour also takes in famous landmarks such as St Michael’s Mount, the Minack Theatre and the Tate St Ives gallery.

The tour costs £540 per person, which includes accommodation, daily luggage transfers, detailed route maps, car parking and emergency support. Cycle hire is available for £60 per person, or £120 per person for electric cycle hire.

With 16 different tours on offer, Cornish Cycle Tours provides holidays for both novice cyclists and those who are more experienced. Routes range from relaxing three day leisure tours to a 14 day tour which includes the Isles of Scilly.
