Top chefs serve up the Big Cornish Breakfast

Published November 9th, 2018

Five of the country’s top chefs are teaming up at this year’s Padstow Christmas festival to host the event’s first ever Big Cornish Breakfast.

Culinary A listers Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth, Mitch Tonks, Brian Turner, and Angela Hartnett will cook and serve breakfast to 50 people on the final day of the festival, which runs from December 6 to 9.

The menu will feature a selection of locally-produced food and drink supplied by stallholders in the festival’s harbourside Christmas market.

“We’re going to keep it simple and let the food speak for itself,”  said Mitch Tonks, who came up with the idea of hosting the charity breakfast.

“There’ll be baked eggs, smoked salmon, sausages, bacon, breads and jams, coffee and tea, and a glass of Cornish bubbles.

“Once the food’s on the table, all the other chefs will be on hand to serve and chat to everyone while they’re enjoying their breakfast.

“It’s the perfect way to showcase some of the wonderful produce which is on sale at the festival.  It’s going to be very special.”

Now in its 11th year, Padstow Christmas Festival is one of the largest of its kind in the country, attracting tens of thousands of people to the town.

As well as four days of cooking demonstrations, Padstow plays host to more than 100 stalls in its popular Christmas market, packed with artisan crafts and West Country food and drink.  It also features live music, a lantern parade, Santa’s grotto, a charity Santa fun run, and a spectacular fireworks display above the harbour.

“The festival attracts people from across the country who travel here to see and learn from their favourite chefs, so it’s great to be able to offer something a little extra this year,” said festival organiser Tina Evans.

“Proceeds from the breakfast will be divided up among a number of local charities, our chance to give something back to the community which supports us so well.

“It’s an opportunity to eat some great food, meet the brilliant chefs who cooked it, and it’s all for a good cause.”

The Big Cornish Breakfast is being served in the Sharp’s Chefs’ Theatre at 9am on December 9. Tickets are priced at £35 each and available from [email protected].
