Lambing weekends on Cornish farmstay

Published September 22nd, 2016

A Cornish farmstay holiday provider is inviting families to become farmers for a weekend, with a new package that includes first-hand experiences of farming life during the lambing season.

From mid-November to mid-December, guests at The Olde House, near Polzeath in North Cornwall, can join the farm team on a Saturday or Sunday, helping in the lambing shed, feeding the ewes, checking on the newborn lambs and perhaps witness some being born. There will also be opportunities to help care for kunekune pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs in pet’s corner.

Jaime Hawkey, manager at The Olde House, comments: “We’ve just had our ewes scanned, and are expecting over 300 lambs in the next few months – this is a great opportunity for children to learn about the farming process first hand, and play with some cuddly lambs while they’re at it!”

The weekend package includes two nights’ accommodation in one of the two or three bedroom self-catering cottages on the farm, with a late checkout on the Sunday. It is available for the set price of £250 between 12 November and 12 December. Lambing experiences are also available for longer breaks, from £410 for a seven night stay.

Jaime Hawkey continues: “Lambs aren’t often born before Christmas in the UK, but in Cornwall we experience a slightly warmer climate, making it possible to have two lambing seasons. Our guests will be witnessing a truly rare sight.”

The weekend package can be booked by calling the office on 01208 813219.

Press trips can be arranged on request. For more information visit www.theoldehouse.co.uk.
