Cornish distillery wins six awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Published May 21st, 2020

A Cornish distillery won six awards in the industry’s highest regarded awards scheme at its first attempt.

At this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Rosemullion Distillery won gold for its Harvest Gin, Gold Rum and Spiced Rum; silver for its Summer Gin and Seafarer’s Gin; and bronze for its Dry Gin.

Founded in 2000 to recognise exceptional products from within the industry, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition invites a panel of experts to take part in a series of blind tasting sessions.

This year, more than 3,000 spirits were entered into the competition, with only a small number of them winning gold, silver or bronze.

Andy Bradbury, co-founder of Rosemullion Distillery, said: “This is the first time we’ve entered the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, so it was a real honour to see our range of Cornish gins and rums holding their own against both well-known brands and small batch spirits.

“What started out as a weekend hobby has now turned into a multi-award-winning distillery – and our accolades show that there’s a real appetite for high-quality spirits which use locally-sourced, humble ingredients.”

Rosemullion Distillery’s Harvest Gin, Gold Rum, and Spiced Rum all picked up gold awards at this year’s competition.

At 40% ABV, the Harvest Gin is made in 200 bottle batches in a copper still, and uses foraged autumnal fruit and a dozen different botanicals, including juniper, coriander, angelica root, liquorice, and black pepper.

Single pot distilled and at 43% ABV, the Gold Rum is carefully oak aged to give a smooth, tropical flavour and citrus lemon notes, while the Spiced Rum (40% ABV), has warming flavours of orange and chocolate, and notes of citrus zest, cloves, ginger, and subtle spices.

Last month, the Gold Rum won a gold medal in the internationally-renowned World Rum Awards, while the Spiced Rum was declared a ‘Style Winner’, which recognises the very best in each category.

Rosemullion Distillery also won silver awards for its Summer Gin and Seafarer’s Gin.

The Summer Gin (40% ABV) is a traditional juniper gin with a kick of citrus and summer fruits, while the Seafarer’s Gin (43% ABV), which was launched in March 2020, uses foraged ingredients from the Cornish coastline including locally sourced samphire, and three types of Cornish seaweed.

The Dry Gin (43%), which picked up a bronze award, uses carefully-selected botanicals complemented by local Cornish ingredients such as seasonal fruit and honey.

Rosemullion Distillery was created in 2019 by husband and wife team Andy and Liz Bradbury, who, with more than 45 years’ combined experience as industrial chemists, wanted to combine their scientific knowledge and processes with a passion for quality spirits.

The distillery’s full product range, which includes four gins, two rums, and a Christmas-inspired spirit, is available to purchase via Rosemullion Distillery’s online shop, and in select stores across the south west of England.
