A provider of social and affordable housing has introduced two new services to help improve the welfare of older residents, vulnerable tenants and young adults in need of employment.
Ocean Housing has launched the Building Futures project, and the Intensive Housing Management Service, to improve residents’ quality of life and opportunities within the Cornish community.
Building Futures
Three Ocean employees have been trained to mentor people who are struggling to find employment, training or education. The new programme covers St Austell, Newquay and surrounding areas.
The project, funded by European Social Fund, is available to young people 16 years or over who are not in education, employment or training, or in receipt of unemployment benefits, aswell as those who are at risk of homelessness.
Becky Kat and Jo Horne are two key workers who are aiming to empower those who’ve had their confidence knocked during the pandemic. They will be delivering personalised advice through sessions with clients, working on their mental health, and assisting in finding opportunities for work experience, training courses and job interviews.
Jo Horne said: “I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to work creatively with individuals and help them overcome emotional barriers. One size doesn’t fit all, and this programme allows us to work one-to-one with clients and cater to their needs. We’re here to help, and I’m looking forward to seeing clients thrive.”
‘Ignite’, a ten week therapeutic group, is also being offered as part of the project. Aneta Kurylowicz is a trained counsellor in trauma and will be running the group to improve mental wellbeing and build self-esteem. Towards the end of the ten weeks, Aneta will focus on job and interview skills, setting clients up with practical skills in searching for work.

Intensive Housing Management Service
Ocean has introduced a new service this month which provides support at a higher level for older tenants. This is in response to an increased number of welfare calls that the company made during the height of the pandemic to ensure tenants’ wellbeing.
The Intensive Housing Management Service will help to deal with local issues efficiently by increasing capacity to inspect communal areas and carry out repairs proactively, and will enable employees to facilitate regular sessions at community hubs, where tenants can voice specific needs.
