Five employees of SPAR South West wholesaler, Appleby Westward, will take part in a one-mile swim across the Camel Estuary from Padstow to Rock to raise money for Marie Curie.
The iconic Padstow to Rock swim will take place on Sunday 30 July 2023 and involves members of the public swimming the one-mile distance between the two coastal towns to raise money for Marie Curie, the charity partner for the event. The swim must be completed within one hour.
The estuary swim has taken place every year since 1970 (except 2020) and has seen over 12,000 swimmers raise over £840,000. Marie Curie has been the charity partner of the event since 2011.
Appleby Westward head office has donated £1,000 to the swimming team’s Just Giving page. The team is aiming for a grand total of £3,000.
Amy Snowdon, Customer Support Coordinator at Appleby Westward, said of the swim: “I’m honoured to be taking part in the Padstow to Rock Swim; it’s a great challenge and Marie Curie is such a phenomenal charity to be raising money and awareness for.
“Every donation enables Marie Curie to provide frontline nursing and hospice care. The right care means everything to people living with a terminal illness, and the money raised means Marie Curie nurses can be there for more people and their families.
“I’m so grateful for all the donations we have received so far and I’m hopeful we will reach our £3,000 target. I’m full of excitement for the day but also a little nervous, swimming in the sea is very different to a nice warm pool!”
Appleby Westward teams across the South West regularly hold fundraisers for Marie Curie as the company’s charity of choice and have raised over £143,000 in the past four years through a variety of efforts, including cake sales, raffles, endurance challenges, and donating 5p for every bunch of bananas and daffodils sold during March.
The swimmer who has contributed the most to the event on Sunday will be awarded with the Hawkins Cup and all swimmers will receive a swimming cap, a t-shirt and a pasty when they reach Rock harbour.
