North Cornwall’s Harbour Brewing Co. has won four awards at the South West Independent Beer Awards, including overall champion of the pre-packaged categories.
Organised by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA), the regional beer awards took place from 19 to 21 April 2018, with more than 500 beers across 24 categories blind-judged by enthusiasts and industry professionals.
Harbour’s Ellensberg Session IPA was named as overall champion of the bottled and canned beer categories. The 4.3% ABV beer, with a perfumed-citrus aroma and juicy, balanced palate, was pitted against the winners from 13 other categories, ultimately claiming the top prize.
Harbour also won gold in the Bottle/Can Premium Lager & Pilsner category for its Pilsner (5% ABV); gold in the Bottle/Can Session IPA category with Ellensberg Session IPA; and silver in the Bottle/Can Session Lager & Pilsner category for its Helles Lager (4.5% ABV).
Guy Sheppard, chairman of SIBA beer competitions and south west director, said: “The standard of the beer was extremely high this year.
“Each beer is judged by four or five judges, who give each beer scores for various attributes – appearance, aroma, flavour, after taste and saleability. Given the quality and quantity of the beers, the brewers who went away with awards have done very well indeed.”
Champions from the eight regional beer awards progress to the national awards, held at SIBA’s annual BeerX event in March 2019.

Harbour’s brewing team is headed up by Stuart Howe, former Parliamentary Beer Group brewer of the year and multiple global award-winner.

Ellensberg Session IPA is available to purchase at Asda supermarkets throughout the UK in 330ml cans, and is sold in restaurants including Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Cornwall, MeatLiquor nationally, and Spiritland and Ealing Park Tavern in London.
