Cornish crab shack opening new beach pop-up

Published July 7th, 2023

A popular Cornish beach shack, originally located in Hayle, will be opening a new pop-up restaurant on the beach in Gwithian.

LULA, which opened in Hayle in 2020, has built a large following thanks to its relaxed beachside dining with dishes and cocktails inspired by America’s Deep South.

The new restaurant will be located at The Rockpool bar, at the north end of Gwithian Beach. It will be open from the evening of Friday 7 July.

Sam Sheffield, who created and continues to run LULA, commented: “We are over the moon to be bringing the LULA vibe to a new spot this summer – and what a spot! The Rockpool is right in the dunes, with views across the beach.

“LULA holds a special place in the hearts of so many people, and it’s been so sad to see the doors closed on our original shack for reasons entirely beyond our control. We’re ecstatic to be able to host our brilliant shackers once again.”

Guests can expect locally-caught seafood, cocktails and sundown beers, served to a soundtrack of live music.

Some of the LULA favourites include the LULA Chowder, with smoked haddock, prawns, bacon, and cream, served up in a sourdough bowl; Cornish lobster, prawn and crayfish rolls; and the 6oz Shack Burger, with Monterey Jack cheese, smoked bacon, gherkins and onion rings.

The new restaurant will be open daily from 9am to 11:30am for breakfast, and 12pm to 8pm for lunch and dinner. Bookings can be made in advance by calling 01326 653653.

James Morgan, who is responsible for The Rockpool, commented: “We believe in looking out for your neighbours, and knowing LULA needed help we were keen to step in and offer them a place to call home.

“It’s a tricky time for the hospitality industry and we need to look after one another. We’re all very excited to welcome LULA to The Rockpool – we love their food and good vibes and think the shackers will love us too! We can’t wait to see you all down at The Rockpool.”

The Rockpool is located at 1 Godrevy Towans, Gwithian, Hayle TR27 5ED. It has its own extensive car park, and direct access to the beach.

Sam added: “The last couple of months have been some of the toughest I’ve ever faced. But we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from locals and previous guests, many of whom have shared such heart-warming messages since we were forced to close.

“LULA is one big family, and we now have a new home! My partner Simon and I are so pleased to welcome my lovely team back once again, and we’re all excited to put our stamp on a new venue.”
