An employee at South West SPAR wholesaler, Appleby Westward, will take part in a 24-hour endurance challenge in aid of Marie Curie.
Taking place on Saturday 29 July from 9am, the challenge will involve Del Phillips completing a 1.4 mile circuit around the Latchbrook area of Saltash, with each lap followed by a set of press ups and a set of pull ups, for a full 24 hours.
As Logistics Director at Appleby Westward, Del is familiar with challenging situations and has built up his fitness stamina through a rigorous training programme on top of his usual exercise regime. He also completed a similar 12-hour challenge in 2022 in which he raised over £2,600 for St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth.
Appleby Westward has supported Del by donating £500, producing a promotional banner and a t-shirt, and displaying posters and donation pots in each of its 133 company-owned SPAR stores across the South West. Marie Curie has been the company’s charity of choice over the last several years with most of its fundraising efforts being in aid of the charity. Appleby Westward has raised over £143,000 for Marie Curie to date.
Del said: “I train on a regular basis anyway but I have recently started to increase the specific training required for this challenge, and I’m determined to do my very best. It won’t be easy by any means, but I know I will have lots of support throughout the challenge, and family members will be cheering me on, so I hope that will be enough to keep me going.
“Marie Curie’s team offers fantastic support and care to so many people, so I wanted to do something that would be challenging enough to generate lots of donations for them. I’m so grateful to Appleby Westward for its donation which really helped to kickstart my Just Giving page.
“The criteria for the challenge is to keep going for the full 24 hours, although I have set myself a personal target of completing 65 miles, 2,500 press ups and 350 pull ups.”
Del’s challenge will begin at 9am on Saturday 29 July 2023 and will run for 24 hours. Donations can be made via his Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/del-phillips-1685257012074?utm_term=RKBj54d9p.
