Experience Cornwall’s Poldark country with a self-guided cycle tour

Published November 29th, 2017

As the hit BBC One drama Poldark begins filming for its fourth series, a Cornish cycling holiday operator has launched a new tour taking in many of the stunning filming locations on the Cornish coastline.

Lanyon Rowe from Cornish Cycle Tours has developed The Poldark Tour, a circular route showcasing the historic sites and landmarks in Cornwall in which the classic novels are based and scenes from the BBC One adaptation is filmed.

New for 2018, the self-guided cycling tour is an eight day excursion covering 177 miles (285 km) in total, with much of the cycling following quiet lanes and cycle routes close to the coastline. Beginning and ending in the north Cornish town of Wadebridge, the tour covers an average cycling distance of 25 miles (41 km) per day.

Lanyon Rowe said: “Alongside Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson, Cornwall’s stunning scenery has become one of the stars of the TV show. The tour takes in over 15 of the filming locations which feature in the first three series.

“Regardless of whether you watch Poldark or not, this tour will appeal to everyone who loves the Cornish landscape, and some of the historic landmarks on this route are quite spectacular. And with filming for the fourth series having started this autumn, there’s even the chance that cyclists on the route will bump into the actors en route.”

Significant locations featured in the tour include the historic tin mines and chimney stacks at Botallack on Cape Cornwall, used as Tressiders Rolling Mill and Wheal Leisure in the BBC One adaption; Porthcurno, which doubles as Ross Poldark’s home, Nampara Cove; and the stunning beach at Holywell Bay, where the distinctive Gull Rock will be recognised by fans of the show.

The route is considered medium difficulty, following coastal roads and country lanes with occasional hilly terrain. Starting from £860 per person, the tour includes seven nights accommodation, luggage transfers, 24 hour assistance and detailed route maps. Cycle hire is available at £15/day for a hybrid touring bike, or £40/day for a Giant Quick E electric bike, which have been introduced for 2018.

Cornish Cycle Tours runs 14 self-guided tours around Cornwall for anyone wishing to see the county by bicycle, ranging from three days to 14 days. Both novices and experienced cyclists are catered for, featuring relaxing leisure tours and more challenging sports tours. Group tours are also available for up to 25 people.

For some tours, transfers are available to and from Cornwall Airport Newquay, and Penzance or Bodmin railway stations.

Direct flights to Newquay, Cornwall, are available from some major airports throughout the UK year-round, and Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Faro and Alicante in the summer months.
