Fond memories, stretching back as far as 70 years, were shared at a recent event for former residents and neighbours of Polgrean Place, St Blazey.
Photos of street parties, ponies, children playing and an overwhelming sense of community were shared at the nostalgic event, which was organised by Ocean Housing to mark the onset of redevelopment in the area.
The event was held at Hands Together, Polgrean Residents Association in Landreath, St Blazey on 22 November, and was an opportunity for local residents to view plans for the area and bid farewell to the homes which are due to be demolished in the New Year.
The housing scheme at Polgrean Place was approved in October and is an ambitious £12 million project by Ocean Housing Group. The redevelopment will provide 51 units for rent, including purpose-built accommodation for older residents, nine for shared ownership, two commercial units, and community spaces.
In an address to those attending, Mark Gardner, chief executive of Ocean Housing group shared his appreciation to all who have supported the project over the past couple of years. He said: “Our thanks go to local councillors and the community who have all seen the redevelopment of the area as a positive step towards improved housing standards for those who require affordable homes.
“We take the welfare of our tenants very seriously and that starts with good quality, energy efficient homes, in a safe environment, and with a strong sense of community.”
A local resident, Amos Putt, helped to host the event and provided historical photos, a guided tour, and anecdotes of his 40 years associated with the area including a personal visit from Prince Charles. He said: “While it is sad to watch a part of our history disappear, many of the properties have lived beyond their expected lifespan. Their redevelopment is a much-needed breath of fresh air that the residents of St Blazey deserve.”
Preparatory work at Polgrean Place has already started with demolition set to commence in January 2020. Gilbert & Goode, part of Ocean Housing Group, will be principal building contractor and it is anticipated the first phase of development will be completed by Spring 2021.
The whole project will be carried out over three phases and will provide affordable one, two and three-bedroomed homes. The development will also include parking, gardens, landscaping, and community spaces which will be used by local businesses and residents.
The build will follow a traditional design of pitched roofs with a mixture of stone and render for the exterior.
