A new Cornish distillery has received international accolades for its gin and rum just weeks after launching.
South Cornwall’s Rosemullion Distillery launched its first four spirits in April 2019: Dry Gin, Summer Gin, Gold Rum and Spiced Rum. Three of the products were entered into the internationally-recognised SIP Awards, along with a fourth spirit which will be released in the autumn.
All four of the products picked up awards, with two winning gold.
Held in California, the SIP Awards is open to businesses across the globe, and is the only true blind-tasting competition that enlists consumers as judges.
977 spirits and mixers were entered this year, considered by more than 140 consumer judges, with only a small selection winning gold, silver and bronze.
Rosemullion Distillery received gold in the flavoured/infused gin category for its Summer Gin – a traditional juniper gin with a kick of citrus and summer fruits, including redcurrant, raspberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and a hint of mint.
The silver award in the gold/dark rum category was given to Rosemullion’s Gold Rum – single pot distilled and oak aged for a smooth and high quality profile.
Rosemullion’s Dry Gin – with carefully-selected botanicals, including juniper, coriander, angelica root, liquorice, and black pepper, complemented by the use of local Cornish ingredients such as seasonal fruit and honey – was awarded bronze in the hotly-contested gin category.
The distillery’s autumn fruit-infused Harvest Gin, due for release in autumn 2019, was also awarded gold in the flavoured/infused gin category.
Reintroducing craft processes to gin and rum production
Rosemullion has been created by husband and wife team Liz and Andy Bradbury. With more than 45 years’ combined experience as industrial chemists, the pair had a desire to combine their scientific knowledge and processes with a passion for quality spirits.
“Distilling and fermenting are clearly very scientific procedures. But it’s only when you mix this with genuine emotional investment that you end up with something special,” says Liz Bradbury.
“Our goal has always been to take humble ingredients and work with them at every step of the process, right through to the bottle. This gives us total control, and the opportunity to experiment. We’ve now ended up with a family of high-quality spirits which we are extremely proud of, and we continue to push ourselves to create amazing flavours.”
Rosemullion is one of a very small number of distilleries which creates its own base spirits from scratch, rather than simply flavouring purchased industrial spirits.
