Appleby Westward, SPAR’s south west wholesaler, has opened a new store in Plymouth.
Located on St George’s Terrace, the new store, which was formerly a Co-Op, has joined Appleby Westward’s expansive list of company-owned stores.
The store will supply the Stoke Village neighbourhood with fresh groceries, household essentials and a wide range of own-brand products. Other services include an in-store bakery, Costa coffee machine and National Lottery facilities.
Appleby Westward has chosen to keep all existing Co-Op staff members, protecting jobs for the local community. A new store manager was recruited from another Plymouth SPAR, where he worked as an assistant store manager. He has been supporting the transferred colleagues and helping them familiarise themselves with new processes.
Calum Fairnie, area manager, said: “I’m extremely happy with the support I have had from the existing team and the Appleby Westward team in ensuring the process of transitioning from Co-Op to SPAR was as smooth as possible.
“We have kitted out the store with the future in mind, so our friendly team can continue to serve our wonderful customers for years to come.
“This store is a great addition to my area and a great addition to the business.”
Upon acquisition on 18 October, Appleby Westward merchandisers, store managers and head office staff closed the store and spent three days helping to deep clean, rebrand and restock the shelves with SPAR product lines.
There has been no change to the opening hours, with the store operating from 07:00 to 22:00 daily.
