A lobster and wine pairing masterclass and a Cornish long table feast are just two of the events being held in a brand new wine theatre at this year’s Padstow Christmas Festival.
Event organisers have joined forces with Tavistock-based Steevenson Wines to launch the new marquee. Experts from Trevibban Mill Vineyard, Camel Valley, Tarquin’s Gin, Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall, and Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant will be hosting a series of food, wine, and cocktail events in the theatre during the festival.
“We’re going to be offering an all-star cast of Cornish wines, fantastic gin, and locally-produced food for the Christmas festival’s first ever wine theatre,” said David McWilliam, who came up with the idea.
“I’ve been a supporter of the festival since its inception 11 years ago, and have watched it grow and flourish, so it’s great to be able to add to its fantastic programme of festivities.”
Padstow Christmas Festival, which runs from 6 to 9 December, is one of the largest of its kind in the country, attracting tens of thousands of people to the town for four days of festive celebrations, cooking demonstrations, West Country food and drink, and artisan crafts.
The Wine Theatre will host 13 events during the course of the festival, ranging from gin tasting with Tarquin’s mixologist, Tom Perkins; cheese and wine matching with Trevibban Mill’s winemaker, Salvatore Leone, and a speed tasting session hosted by a panel of experts including Charlie Stein and The Guardian’s wine writer, Fiona Beckett.
The new theatre will be situated on the terrace at Greens Café overlooking Padstow’s harbour.
“We’re looking forward to working with David and Steevenson Wines to share our love of great food with their love of great wine,” said the café’s owner, Sharon Whittock.
“It’s a great opportunity for Greens to get involved with Padstow Christmas Festival. We’ve seen it grow over the years into an amazing event, and it’s helped turn what used to be a quiet time of the year into a busy one.”
