Calling all tractor fanatics and animal lovers – a working farm in north Cornwall is inviting aspiring young farmers to experience farming life for a weekend during the early lambing season.
From mid-November to mid-December, guests at The Olde House, near Polzeath in north Cornwall, can join the farm team on a Saturday and Sunday to help in the lambing shed, feed the ewes, check on the newborn lambs and perhaps even witness some being born.
There will also be opportunities to help care for kunekune pigs, chickens and guinea pigs in pets’ corner.
Jaime Hawkey, manager at The Olde House, commented: “We feel so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside and lovely animals, and want to help instil this passion in the next generation by providing a space for children to learn about the farming process and ask all the questions they’ve always wanted to.”
The weekend package includes two nights’ accommodation in one of the two or three bedroom self-catering cottages on the farm, with a late checkout on the Sunday. It is available for the set price of £250 per cottage, over the weekends of 17/18 November, 24/25 November, and 1/2 December 2017.
Jaime continued: “Lambs aren’t often born before Christmas in the UK, but the slightly warmer climate in Cornwall makes it possible for us to have two lambing seasons.
“We’ve just had our ewes scanned, and are expecting over 350 lambs in the next few months. This is a great opportunity for children to get stuck in, and for mum and dad to have a relaxing weekend away too!”
The Olde House offers 28 self-catering holiday cottages, situated in the pretty village of Chapel Amble. Facilities include an indoor leisure centre, with heated pool, sauna, whirlpool and snooker table, an outdoor tennis court, children’s indoor and outdoor adventure playgrounds, a pets’ corner, a farm trail, and much more.
The weekend package can be booked by calling the office on 01208 813219.
